FDA Approves New Diabetes Product

MEDport, a consumer healthcare company specializing in designing, manufacturing and distributing medication management products, has introduced Sharps “On The Go” Transport and Disposal Product™ the first and only personal sharps disposal container that is U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved.

Every day in the United States, persons with Type 1 diabetes dispose of an average of five used hypodermic syringes, according to the American Diabetes Association. This adds up to approximately nine billion used insulin needles that must be properly disposed of each year.

Sharps "On the Go" helps address the growing health concern of contaminated needles and offers the only FDA approved way to conveniently dispose of needles. The product is a small, lightweight hard cast container that is easy-to-use. It features two forms of closure - a temporary closure for transportation and a patented safe-lock lid that features a permanent locking mechanism for safe disposal. The only personal and portable product of its kind on the market, Sharps "On the Go" is specially designed and manufactured to be leak-resistant and impact-resistant.

Until now, there has not been a convenient and safe disposal options for consumer's needles, syringes, and lancets. There has been a virtual hodge-podge of state-by-state disposal options, including mail-back sharps disposal programs and in-store disposal. None of these programs has proven to generate significant user participation and require users to carry the used product to disposal. With the availability of Sharps "On the Go" in retail stores nationwide, sharps users may dispose of the day's used syringes and sharps safely and conveniently.
